Akira has some bizarre demon powers including electric-powered eyebrows. There are other elements in the Devilman manga that didn’t make it into the show. Jinmen, the demon based off of a Kappa, is given a lot more screen time and he’s truly terrifying. There are some fantastic action and horror scenes that didn’t appear in the anime adaptation, with the black-and- white aspect of the manga only adding to the creepy atmosphere. Yeah, she does follow the anime trope of being the tsundere step-sister who secretly loves Akira, but she’s really entertaining. In the manga, Miki is much more expressive. Miki is awesome! While I did like Miki’s portrayal in the anime, she was a little bland. The character designs are iconic and portray the essence of who these people are even if they are not dressed in contemporary clothes. The art holds up incredibly well considering that the manga is nearly 50 years old. Akira doesn’t become Devilman until page 222. Considering the thickness of the manga volume, there’s very little plot or character progression. We start with a fantastic action set-piece, then get bogged down in a a sea of backstory and exposition, then jump right into “freak of the week” style adventures. The Devilman manga suffers from inconsistent pacing. How does the manga hold up and is it a must-buy for fans of the anime? Since its original publication, Devilman has influenced dark anime for decades, including Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, and Magical Girl Madoka. With the critical success of Devilman Crybaby, the original Devilman manga by Go Nagai is being printed in English for the first time.

I'd love to see Lady Devilman and Violence Jack in particular, plus if we're talking Nagai we've got to see Mazinger Z eventually.Devilman was a manga published in 1972 and broke new ground in the horror genre with its graphic depictions of violence and sexuality.

With Devilman and Cutie Honey now available in English, I hope this paves the way for more classic Go Nagai works making there way over here. I still wish we got the one volume edition which was released in Italy, but this is good enough. Presentation of the volume is as good as volume 1, so good there. Nagai has an energetic style which may be off putting for some, but has a charm to it. I can't comment on the quality of translation as I can't read Japanese, but the script flows as good as you'd expect from a comic from nearly 50 years ago. To reiterate what I just mentioned, this volume is missing a few pages from the original 1972 printing, however this is due to it being a translation of the most recent Japanese release so is not an attempt at censorship by seven seas. The merged chapter numbering is due to these two volumes being translations of the most recent Japanese release, which was released as 5 paperback volumes, but included Shin after chapter 5 of Devilman and removed short scenes here and there. The Shin Devilman chapter is a spin-off time travel story focusing on native americans.

As with volume one the Shin chapter is not advertised as being present, but is counted into the chapter numbering for the main series. This volume contains chapter 5 of Shin Devilman, followed by chapters 6-11 of the main Devilman series.

It's no understatement to say that without Devilman, we'd never have Berserk or Evangelion.
#Devilman manga hardcover series
This series is hugely influential and paved the way for more violent andature content in Japanese comics. Without giving spoilers, this volume gets very dark for its time, with some very shocking moments that make you want to keep reading. The second (and final) volume of the hardcover omnibus style release of the influential 1972 Japanese comic book series, Devilman, this volumes release marks the first time Devilman has ever been fully released in English.
